Famous Brazilian parachutist Luigi Cani dropped more than 100 million seeds of 27 native tree species from an airplane at an altitude of 14,000 feet into a deforested area of the Amazon region.
The 300kg of seeds were transported in a biodegradable wooden box of more than 1m³.
Cani jumped when he reached 6,500 feet in the cleared area, “dived at 300 km/h, reached the box in free fall and released the seeds at the right height to ensure precise and even distribution”.
“The seeds have a germination rate of over 95% and do not require human intervention, so in a few years we will see the fruits of this unprecedented action”, told the athlete who performed the jump to the international press.
