Using raw materials abundant in the village of Mekarwangi in rural Indonesia, the RAW Architecture office (Realrich Architecture Workshop) has created a stunning project for a multifunctional space. A house, a school zone and a commercial zone were built with bamboo, stone and recycled plastic.
With a total area of 400 square meters, the project impresses with the harmony and integration between different spaces and materials.
The design used a stone base combined with bamboo walls and structure. The roof combines a recycled plastic waterproofing membrane and local straw made from nipa leaves ( fruity nypa ), a plant species widely used in local construction.
Organic forms and local craftsmanship are present in all spaces. Inside, the ground floor comprises two bedrooms, a bathroom, the main room, the kitchen and the dining room. On the upper floor is the master bedroom.
The residential area was called Sumarah and consisted of three floors, two children’s rooms, a main room and shared bathrooms. The windows also use recycled plastic panels and can be opened to provide air circulation and thermal comfort.
The house is elevated on bamboo supports, creating a shaded space, occupied by a two-car garage and a bathroom.
The second building is a two-story structure for outdoor meetings and gatherings, and is expected to house a school in the future. These are meeting spaces that include a workshop and a prayer room. This building is named after Kujang.
The third area was named Saderhana and is a simpler construction, with two one-story buildings housing a dentist’s practice and a design studio. They are built with bamboo, concrete and covered with a thatched roof.
