The most effective homemade traps to defend against flies

The arrival of good weather, and especially summer, is synonymous with flies in some areas, and it sometimes becomes difficult to live with them. Its bothersome presence can be the most uncomfortable and the hardest to eliminate. Forget the classic insecticides, sprays or electric diffusers harmful to the environment and our health. Today we are going to share some homemade methods, more or less effective depending on the situation, to fight against flies.

Flies survive in all kinds of weather conditions, there are over 1.2 million species of flies flying around us. And flies are also one of the most dangerous vectors of diseases.

In addition to being uncomfortable, flies are dangerous because they carry, in their flight back and forth, 1 million bacteria each. It happens that flies fly, land, anywhere and, especially where there is organic matter in poor condition – excrement, waste, carrion, putrefaction – because it is the “scent” that they like. most. It has to do with foraging, although they also like flower nectar. For this reason, flies can carry different pathogens.

Today we will try to fight them with some old recipes, which we hope can help you cope with this problem. We will make fly traps, using recycled materials and natural ingredients, which you can find in your kitchen. Many can also be effective in repelling mosquitoes.

  3. Trap for open spaces.
  4. Sticky paper trap.
  5. Hot vinegar trap.
  6. Vinegar spray.

Fly trap.

To make this trap, you will need a plastic bottle, tape, water, and sugar. Cut the bottle into two parts about 5 centimeters below its cork, precisely where the bottle begins to expand. Place the “head” piece (the smaller part) inside the other piece with the beak down.

Secure the two parts of the bottle, where they were cut, with tape around them. In a saucepan, place 5 tablespoons of sugar which you must distribute evenly on the bottom, and add water until you cover it. Stir and cook over low heat until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Leave to cool and pour the mixture into the bottle. The trap works best if heated in the sun. If for some reason you don’t have sugar or water, you can also put food, for example a piece of apple, in the bottom of the bottle. Manufacturing instructions here.

Fly trap with glass.

One option to avoid using plastic is to use a glass container. Take a large glass jar and put some beer or some fruit in it. It seems that flies like beer! They are attracted to the presence of carbon dioxide and unpleasant odors.

You can also use sugary substances, so you can try adding a teaspoon or two of sugar to your beer. Then, with a piece of cardboard (reuse a magazine cover for example) and tape, make a cone that will be placed in the mouth of the container. It will work like a funnel and should not come into contact with the beer.

Place the trap near a window, fruit basket, or on the table when eating outdoors. The flies will probably leave you drinking your beer in peace!

Trap for open spaces.

This trap is intended for open spaces such as a backyard, garden, balcony or patio. You will need a plastic bottle. Wash it well before setting the trap. Fill the bottle halfway with water and pour half a cup of sugar into it, stirring well.

Using a funnel, add vinegar, as you can see in the video. Then put a whole banana peel. Just give the bottle a light shake and put it in the garden. You can also hang it. Flies will be attracted by the smell of the liquid inside.

Sticky paper trap.

To prepare your fly paper, you need wrapping paper (bread paper), water, sugar and honey or liquid syrup (corn, rice or agave). In a saucepan, put a glass of water, a glass of sugar and a tablespoon of syrup or honey. Stir over low heat until the mixture becomes smooth and sticky.

Pour it into a mold or on a plate and impregnate one by one the strips that you have to make with the gift paper. Hang them on the clothesline and wait for the flies to come!

Hot vinegar trap.

They say you have to do this trick with apple cider vinegar, but really any vinegar, acetic acid, any type will work (cheapest will work too).

The trick is to put hot vinegar in a glass with a wide mouth, in the mouth of which you need to fix a funnel (plastic, paper, as you prefer) so that the entry of flies is facilitated, and the exit is not not.

Leave your trap where there are the most flies in your home. While the vinegar is hot, its aroma will spread, attracting nearby flies, without thinking they will enter through the funnel and become trapped in the glass. From time to time, empty the trap and renew the vinegar.

But it is also true that vinegar attracts, just like ripe fruit, those other little flies (fruit fly or vinegar fly) that fly around the bowl of fruit.

Vinegar spray.

You can also spray pure vinegar on flying flies, they won’t die but they will be slower and thus kill them in the traditional way. It’s much better than the insecticides we use, just as effective, cheaper and much healthier for you and the rest of humanity.

Lemon.

The smell of lemon in the house does not attract flies or mosquitoes, but rather drives them away, as well as other smells like cinnamon, cloves, lavender or calendula.

To use lemon as a “fly scarer”, the recipe starts the day before:

Cut a lemon and leave it on the racks of your oven, door open, oven off all night.

The next morning, turn on the oven to the lowest temperature you have. The objective is only to diffuse the aroma by heating the lemon, so the temperature must be mild (no more than 100°C). Turn off the oven as soon as the smell of lemon diffuses.

Milk, sugar and pepper trap.

This is an old English recipe which calls for a pint of milk, 2 tbsp sugar (the darker the better as it is more attractive to flies) and 4 tbsp ground pepper .

Cook the ingredients, all together, over low heat for 15 minutes. Pour into shallow dishes and spread them around the house in the usual places where there are flies. After a while you will see that the milk is curdling from the dead flies.

Herbal burner to keep flies away.

Coffee, cinnamon, cloves, lavender, calendula, sacred grass, chrysanthemum or rue, are some of the aromas that neither flies nor mosquitoes like.

A good trick is to leave the burners lit with the herbs or essences you like the most, in the rooms where you need to get rid of the flies.

Also effective if you use the homemade essential oil in the heat diffuser, with a candle or in the cap, or when you boil the chosen herbs, diffusing their aroma throughout the kitchen.

Another interesting piece of information widely used in Mediterranean countries is to have aromatic plants such as sage, rosemary, thyme, basil, oregano or chrysanthemums, on kitchen windows and on doors (at the exit) because they repel flies and mosquitoes. for its strong aroma.

This solution is beautiful, colorful and suitable for those who have windows facing the sun, with eaves that allow the placement of pots.

You need a plastic bottle, the size will depend on the number of flies, water and sugar. Make two windows to the bottle, one on each side. Remove the cork and thread a piece of string or yarn through a hole. It will serve you both to place a fruit inside the bottle, and to hang it where you need it.

At the bottom of the bottle, you place a mixture of water and sugar or honey.
