Tesla celebrates the 1,000,000th electric car produced in Shanghai

With more than 2 million produced in California, Tesla exceeds 3 million units.

Tesla celebrates the 1 millionth electric car produced at the Tesla Giga factory in Shanghai, China. The official confirmation states that the millionth car was manufactured on August 13, 2022.

Recall that the construction of the plant began on January 7, 2019, while the first cars produced at the site were delivered to customers in China in December 2019. Initially, the plant produced the Tesla Model 3, to which is then added the Model Y.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk praised the team, noting that the cumulative total now exceeds 3 million units (including more than 2 million produced in Fremont, Calif., completed in July).

Congratulations to Giga Shanghai for building the millionth car! The total number of Teslas made already exceeds 3M“.

The first million was reached in the first quarter of 2020 and the second in the third quarter of 2021.

The Tesla Giga Shanghai factory is the the largest electric vehicle factory in the world which according to the latest quarterly report can produce more than 750,000 Model 3/Model Y per year. It is also the first automobile manufacturing center in China to be 100% owned by a foreign company (before Giga Shanghai, China required 50/50 joint ventures).

Tesla’s combined installed manufacturing capacity at the end of the second quarter of 2022 was estimated at more than 1.9 million units. This means that in about 12 months we could see a new milestone of 5 million Teslas produced worldwide.

According to Grace Tao, Tesla’s vice president of external affairs, more than 95% of the parts used at the Giga factory in Shanghai come from local suppliers, while the equipment is 99.9% Chinese.

That’s a very high level of product localization, but Tesla might not stop there. In the past, there have been reports that the company may design and develop a new model in China.

Besides Fremont and Shanghai, Tesla also produces cars in Berlin, Germany and Texas, but these two new factories are in the early stages of start-up. In the future, Tesla may build its fifth electric vehicle factory in Canada.
