The photovoltaic and electric vehicle revolution in the home continues to gain momentum with important alliances. SunPower and General Motors are the latest partnership of solar + automotive companies to develop a new home power system that will allow GM electric vehicles to provide backup power to a home when properly equipped.
GM has also named SunPower its preferred supplier of electric vehicle charging facilities and its exclusive supplier of solar power.
We are proud to work with General Motors, an innovation leader in America, to seamlessly connect home power and electric vehicles. This is an essential step in making an all-electric lifestyle easy and even more beneficial.
Peter Faricy, CEO of SunPower.
Home power system and installation services are expected to be available in conjunction with the retail launch of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado, scheduled for fall 2023.
A solar-powered EV customer will eventually become the norm as homeowners seek to offset their higher electricity bills.
Customers with a home energy system, a compatible electric vehicle and a properly equipped home should also be able to store solar-generated electricity in their vehicle’s battery and export it directly to their home. during hours when electricity is more expensive.
This gives them the opportunity to save even more on your electricity billsdepending on the size of the house, energy consumption and utility rates.
With its two-way charging capability, the Silverado EV, when paired with a home power system, should provide enough electricity to power the entire home in the event of a grid outage.
Once available, Chevrolet Silverado EV customers will be able to install their home power system at the same time as their Silverado EV charger to enable Vehicle Power to Home (V2H) or choose to do so at a later date.
For interested customers, SunPower and GM will evaluate the compatibility of the home’s electrical system with bi-directional charging. Customers can also choose to purchase a SunPower solar system for their home.
Leveraging the combined expertise of our two companies, we work collaboratively to develop great products, services and solutions, and to provide customers with the tools to help them access and manage their home energy applications.
Travis Hester, vice president of growth operations for GM EV.
