New battery technology allows electric cars to charge in 10 minutes

Scientists at Pennsylvania State University have unveiled a major advancement in electric vehicle battery design that allows a typical electric vehicle battery to recharge in 10 minutes.

Innovative lithium-ion battery design provides Unprecedented combination allowing for faster charging time and greater energy storage for greater travel range, according to the researchers.

The need for smaller, faster-charging batteries is greater than ever. There are simply not enough batteries and critical raw materials, especially those produced domestically, to meet the projected demand.

Keeping batteries always at the right temperature has been a big challenge for battery engineers. Until now, they relied on bulky external heating and cooling systems to regulate the temperature of the batteries, which react slowly and waste a lot of energy.

Wang and his team decided to regulate the temperature from inside the battery.. They developed a new battery structure that adds ultra-thin nickel foil as a fourth component, in addition to the anode, electrolyte, and cathode. Acting as a stimulus, the nickel foil self-regulates the temperature and responsiveness of the battery, enabling a 10-minute rapid charge on almost any electric vehicle battery.

True fast-charging batteries would have an immediate impact. Since there are not enough raw minerals for every internal combustion engine car to be replaced by a 150 kWh EV, fast charging is essential for EVs to become mainstream.
