First check if the bird is a hatchling, a chick or a young bird

When you encounter a baby bird outside its nest, you need to determine what stage it is in. Is it a chick? A baby? Or just young bird?

puppies

the puppies they are young birds that have just been born. Unlike chicks, they have no body hair, they are very small, and their eyes are also closed. If you come across a hatchling, chances are it has fallen out of its nest. These babies need help because they are too young to survive on their own and may not survive without help.

Chick

just one Chick he is a bit older than the youngsters, but still not old enough to fend for himself. They usually have a few sprouted feathers and are 3 days to 2 weeks old. If you happen to find one on the ground, it will be defenseless just like the young one, vulnerable to malnutrition since it does not feed, as well as to predators such as cats and to bad weather, because it would not withstand a heavy rain or a lot of sun exposure.

young birds

Young birds are those that are over two and a half weeks old. They have open eyes and small feathered wings. Young birds are often found trying to fly on the ground, but they are not yet able to do so completely. If you see a young bird on the ground, you do not need to pick it up, because there is no need to save it, it probably has its nest nearby and may be able to return there on its own.

How can we help a baby or chick that is on the ground

If you find hatchlings on the ground, they may have fallen from the nest. Try to locate the nest by looking for bent or broken plants and trees nearby, and check for broken eggs or bird sounds around, this may help you find it. If you find feathers on the ground, try to follow them back to their place of origin.

  1. Wear gloves. Gloves can be purchased for just €2. For those without gloves, you can use a plastic bag over your hand or all you have to do is wash your hands thoroughly,
  2. Pick up the baby bird and put it back in the nest as soon as possible.

If the nest is damaged or difficult to access either because it is in an inaccessible place or too high, try replacing it with a woven basket. Since woven baskets such as wicker baskets are made from materials that allow free breathing and filter water, they will be a perfect substitute.

Leave the little bird in the basket and make sure its mother or father is back and knows it is in this new location. This is important, because even if it is separated from its nest, they will still bring it food. You can leave and come back later to check it out.

If the mother or father has not returned, you should get more involved and help the little one survive.

Put on gloves, wash your hands, or put on a plastic bag that will serve as a substitute for gloves. Take the little bird and put it in a shoebox with kitchen or toilet paper. This will help with the temperature and eliminate humidity in the area.

Place the box with the bird in a dark, quiet place for him. It prevents children from disturbing it, let alone touching it. We know seeing a bird can be exciting for the little ones in the house.

Try searching the internet or calling the same municipality in your town for the phone number of a local wildlife service. If you live in a small town, the government may not have an animal relief service, but you will surely find independent local animal relief organizations that can take care of the bird.

Why can’t you touch a baby bird?

Many people think that a mother bird will abandon her young if she smells human scent on it, but nothing could be more wrong than that. The mother will not be able to smell and she will not know that her calf has been touched by someone else. Birds are like humans in this respect, they recognize their young by their sounds and appearance.

So why wear gloves?

This is done primarily to protect against viruses and diseases that can be transmitted very easily from humans to birds and vice versa.

Reason why you should not keep a baby bird found on the ground

We know that your instincts for protecting the animal could probably lead you to consider keeping the bird, but there are several reasons why you shouldn’t keep it.

  • The bird has a much better chance of surviving with wildlife rehabilitators. Even with them, the bird has a good chance of dying. Imagine what the possibilities are with you. The young need their mother to survive without her it is very difficult.
