Mitigating the effects of climate change

These proposals were presented at the opening of the XI Meeting of Ibero-American Ministers of the Environment, held Monday and Tuesday in Santo Domingo, with the presence of 22 countries from the region. The Dominican Minister of the Environment, Miguel Ceara, have opted for sustainable financial systems that steer investments towards climate action, achieving a greater presence of the private sector.

The need for external financing to mitigate the effects of climate change “he is huge”said Gustavo Manez, Regional Climate Change Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

According to Mañez, only 7% of dedicated funds in the region to respond to the crisis generated by the pandemic “are aligned with sustainability criteria”i.e. they miss the opportunity to recover “sustainably”. This percentage is very far from that devoted to this question by the developed countries, which is between 20% and 30%, he specified in his speech.

In turn, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Unccd), Andrea Mesa, underlined that the current situation requires an investment “unprecedented” to deal with climate change. “We need this mobilization of non-reimbursable resources, resources that are also reimbursable but at an affordable cost that allow us as a region to carry out these transformations”said.

From the discussions of the meeting, it is hoped to obtain a consensus document to present it to the Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government to be held in March of next year in the Dominican Republic.
