House built with bamboo, stones and recycled plastics

A construction in Indonesia brings together residential space, classrooms and a workspace in a stunning project

Using cheap and plentiful raw materials in a rural Indonesian village, architectural firm Mekarwangi, RAW Architecture (Realrich Architecture Workshop) came up with a striking design for a multifunctional space. A house, a school zone and a commercial zone were built with bamboo, stone and recycled plastic.

With a total area of 400 square meters, the project impresses with its harmony and the integration of different spaces and materials.

The project used a stone foundation combined with bamboo walls and structure. The roof combines a recycled plastic waterproofing membrane with a local straw roof made from nipa (Nypa fruticnas) leaves, a type of plant often used in local construction.

Organic forms and local craftsmanship are present in all spaces. Inside, the ground floor comprises two bedrooms, a bathroom, the main living room, the kitchen and the dining room. On the upper floor is the master bedroom.

The residential area is called Sumarah and has three floors, two children’s rooms, a master bedroom and shared bathrooms. The windows also use recycled plastic panels and can be opened to provide air circulation and thermal comfort.

The house is raised above the ground on bamboo supports, creating a shaded space occupied by a two-car garage and a bathroom.

The second building is a two-story structure for outdoor meetings and gatherings and, in the future, is expected to house a school. These are meeting and meeting spaces that include a workshop and a prayer room. This building was given the name of Kujang.

The third area was named Saderhana and is a simpler construction with two buildings on the ground floor where a dentist’s office and a design studio are located. They are constructed of bamboo, concrete and topped with a thatched roof.
