Sargassum seaweed can become a real nuisance on tourist beaches, but in fact Sargassum was a perfect opportunity for a young man to create sargassum building blockswho have distinguished themselves to be ecological and resistant.
Among the main features of these blocks we can highlight that they are ecological and resistantwhich also have a more affordable price than concrete thanks to the fact that it uses sargassum as its main material.
These blocks were given the name “serga-blocks »which are made from Sargassum seaweed, which is found in tropical areas almost all over the world and has a negative impact on marine life and tourism.
Omar Vazquez was the one who saw a great opportunity where other people just saw a plague, get turn them into bricks and thus be able to build rustic houses using it. These bricks have already been studied by UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico), where analysis has shown that the blocks are indeed strong and durable. These blocks can be up to 50% cheaper than other materials.
The Sargassum color is removed during the brick making process, so the end result is a rustic brick that looks great, so there’s no problem with that.

What is the price of sargassum bricks?
One of the first details that we must take into account is that Serga-Block is a perfect material for constructions on beaches, since it is a cool brick in summer, while in winter it is dry and hot. The weight of each of these blocks is around MXN$10 ($0.50), making them a much cheaper option compared to other types of blocks.
As we mentioned before, an excess of Sargassum can have a negative impact on the things it is in. These are large amounts of algae that do not allow corals, turtles and other marine animals to develop properly. In addition to affecting tourism on these beaches.
Fortunately, over the years, serga-block has begun to become quite a popular construction option, which is why its use is already used in up to 5 factories located in different parts of Mexico.
A step for a better future
The first house that was built using this block is known as “Casa Angelita”, which Oscar built in dedication to his mother, who was built entirely with this Sargassum brick. It’s a model house that was donated.
As it concerns impact that working in construction with this type of material has in fact greatly benefited the people of the region, since in addition to generating jobs, several houses have been donated to people from the community.
