Battery recycling is a very important topic that we have talked about many times. With the development of e-mobility, which involves an increasing use of batteries, several companies are working on the creation of recycling plants for batteries that have reached the end of their life, in order to recover important raw materials that can be reused to produce new batteries.
And on this subject comes very important news. In fact, the largest battery recycling plant in Europebuilt by the joint venture between Northvolt and Hydro, became operational.
The plant, called hydrovolt, is located in Fredrikstad, in the south of Norway.
According to reports, this plant is capable of processing approximately 12,000 tonnes of batteries per year (equivalent to approximately 25,000 batteries).
Thanks to the recycling technology used in this plant, up to 95% of the battery materials can be recovered, such as plastic, copper, aluminum and “black mass”, a compound containing nickel, manganese, cobalt and lithium. .
In addition, the plant has a system that recovers the “dust” usually lost during recycling.
These are certainly very interesting numbers. However, the joint venture wants to do much more. In fact, according to reports, the goal is to be able to process 70,000 tons of batteries per year by 2025 and 300,000 tons of batteries per year by 2030which equates to approximately 150,000 batteries in 2025 and 500,000 in 2030.
Recovered raw materials reduce dependence on mining as a main source of raw materials for batteries.
These battery recycling activities will directly contribute to the sustainability of the battery industry and are necessary to meet new European regulations governing battery production, including upcoming mandatory recycling targets.
This factory will also be very important for Northvolt, which aims to manufacture its battery cells using 50% recycled materials by 2030.
Northvolt, it should be remembered, has secured more than $50 billion in battery contracts with key customers such as BMW, Fluence, Scania, Volkswagen, Volvo and Polestar.
