Clean clothes on a clean planet

Did you know that thousands of plastic microparticles are released with every wash that are not disposed of in sewage treatment plants… and that travel from your washing machine to the ocean itself, mixing with sand, corals and becoming food for marine life? According to some studies, Every time we use a washing machine, more than 700,000 plastic fibers are released into the environment.. And that’s without taking into account the cost of water, energy… and its impact on the planet.

And yet, there is always good news! In-depth studies and revealing data give us clear clues on how to change our habits and, with them, bet on sustainability and respect for the environment.

Lower the temperature of the washing machine

The study The truth about laundry carried out by Electrolux finds that by reducing the temperature of a wash to 30°C, the GWP (Global Warming Potential) is reduced by 19%. In real terms, this represents a saving equivalent to 27.2 kg of CO₂ per washing machine per year.

Let’s think about what that means. If we estimate that there are 375 million households in Europe and that 48% of households wash at 40°C, or even at a higher temperature, we have around 180 million households that wash at 40°C.

If each of these homes lowered the temperature to 30°C, the impact on GWP would be reduced to the equivalent of 4.9 million tonnes of CO₂ per year!!!

Better liquid detergent than powder

The type of detergent used also has a more than considerable impact on the global warming potential.

If, in addition to lowering the temperature, we switch to a liquid detergent, the potential savings of GWP are also very encouraging; the impact could be as high as saving the equivalent of over 50 kg of CO₂ per washing machine per year!

Until now, many of you may be wondering… “Yeah… but is there a liquid detergent that works at 30°C?

It exists and, moreover, it is an echo. It’s named after an Asian seasoning, and yet this Spanish brand has pulled off the seemingly impossible. Washaby is the detergent that washes your clothes without dirtying the planet and those who live there. It’s so simple. And that sounds logical, doesn’t it? Washing something doesn’t have to mean dirtying something else.
