A school in Barcelona and its neighbors create a solar energy community, it could be the first “seed” to spread throughout the city

The project, supported by the town hall, which started on the roof of a school in Poblenou, could be extended to the whole city.

A new energy community will supply municipal and residential buildings in Poblenou

The Barcelona Energy Agency, the Institute of the Four Cantons, the family association of the same institute and the Association of Veïnes i Veïns del Poblenou have promoted the launch of an energy community in this neighborhood that will take advantage of the solar energy through photovoltaic systems

The Poblenou Energy Community will supply the Institute of the Four Cantons, the Maria Espinalt Institute, the Civic Center of Can Felipa – Social Rights Offices and the Llevant Fire Station.

Indeed, the Institut des Quatre Cantons already has a 58 kWp photovoltaic installation on the roof, which will be the initial production pole from which the new community will be created.

In addition, the project plans to share 30% of the electricity produced with neighbors who live less than 500 m from the institute. Participation is voluntary and in this first phase of the project there is no cost, since it is a pilot test with a collaboration protocol.

To participate, you must be a member of the municipal energy distributor, Barcelona Energia, and registration entitles you to benefit from 500 W of self-consumption of energy, for at least one year.

Currently, a total of thirty neighbors have joined the initiative, and they can stop being part of the community whenever they want.

Once the community is formed, it is expected that the power generation and number of participants, both public and private, will be created.

This initiative is similar to other energy community models such as La Bordeta or Can Girapells or the promotion of self-consumption facilities in residential buildings with the Moment Solar initiative and solar power plants located in public spaces.

The objective of all these interventions is to increase the use of electricity produced from renewable energies in the city, the most efficient and cost-effective solution to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050.
